On my last day in London, I said goodbye to my dear friends living in Worksop and headed back to a hotel near Heathrow Airport for my final night in the UK š„ŗāØ
ā¦And thatās where the trouble began šš¦
To be honest, I should have booked a taxi properly in advance.
I had even downloaded the Uber app before my trip because Iād watched Japanese YouTuber Ryuu Crew, a Kansai-style former cabin crew creator, always using Uber overseas āļø
But for some reason, I thought:
āEh, itās Heathrow Airport. Iāll just grab a taxi there. Itāll be fine.ā š¤£
Big mistake ššø
I went straight to the taxi rank at Heathrow and told the female driver:
āSheraton Heathrow Hotel, please šā
She replied:
āOK!ā
So I relaxed and trusted everything was fineā¦
Until we arrived š±
The driver had taken me to a completely different hotel:
āSheraton Skyline Hotel London Heathrowā š
When we arrived, she happily said:
āHere we are šā
But immediately I knew something was wrong.
The building looked NOTHING like the photos on Booking.com š¤£š¦
So I said:
āWait wait wait!!! This isnāt the right one! Thereās another Sheraton, right? I said Sheraton Heathrow Hotel!ā
And she casually replied:
āOhhh, THAT one? Sorry šā
At that point, the fare had already gone over Ā£35 šøšøšø
Then she said:
āWell⦠Iāll keep it at Ā£35. I wonāt charge you more šā
And I was likeā¦
āHang on a second š¤£ā
I honestly felt the correct ride should have been around Ā£25 or so š„²
So I told her:
āĀ£35 sounds a bit too expensiveā¦š„ŗš¦ā
After some discussion, she finally lowered it to Ā£30 š
Still expensive though š¤£šø
But honestly, I was unfamiliar with the area, and I should have checked more carefully myself, so I just accepted it and continued to the correct hotel.
Eventually, after driving around quite a bit more, I finally arrived at the real hotel ššØ
It truly felt like London gave me one final ālessonā before I left š
When I explained everything to the hotel staff, they immediately said:
āOof⦠yeah, that was expensive. You got unlucky there š ā
But since I had already paid, there wasnāt much I could do anymore š
The next morning, I had an early flight from Heathrow, so I asked the front desk:
āHow should I get to the airport tomorrow? š„ŗā
And surprisingly, the hotel had a touchscreen booking system inside the lobby š³āØ
You could choose between:
š A shared shuttle minibus
š A private taxi
Of course, after the previous nightās disaster, I immediately chose the shared shuttle bus š¤£āØ
And guess how much it cost?
Only Ā£9 ššø
That somehow made the previous Ā£30 taxi mistake feel even more painful š¤£
Thankfully, the shuttle worked perfectly, and I safely arrived at Heathrow the next morning š„¹āļø
But the biggest realization came afterwardā¦
I suddenly thought:
āWait⦠did I even need to stay near Heathrow in the first place? š¤Æā
Back when I used to visit the UK years ago, things were different.
But now, Heathrow Express exists šāØ
You can get from Heathrow to Paddington Station in central London in only about 15 minutes š³
Even the Underground only takes around 30 minutes or so.
Which meansā¦
Thereās honestly not much reason anymore to stay at an airport hotel near Heathrow šš¦
And then I realized something else.
Around Heathrow, I saw several hotels that looked closed or abandoned.
At first I wondered:
āWhy are so many hotels shutting down? š¤ā
Now I understand.
Because London is SO easy to access from Heathrow these days š
Why stay near the airport, pay expensive taxi fares, and risk getting ripped off, when central London is so close? š„²
Honestly, I kept thinking:
āYou idiottttt š¤£š¤£š¤£ā
But wellā¦
Thatās part of travel too āļøāØ
This trip taught me a very important lesson:
Prepare properly.
Research properly.
And always book your transport in advance š
Next time I visit London, Iām definitely going to travel smarter š„¹š¬š§āØ
